However, figurative language often makes the listeners have a different interpretation. This problem occurs because figurative language cannot be understood and interpreted literally. The reason is that figurative language is used as an indicator to get the word's special meaning (Abrams, 1999). This research provides an overview of figurative language in song lyrics and its meaning. This research is entitled Investigating Figurative Language in the Song Lyrics of Pamungkas "Flying Solo" Album. The aims of this research are to classify some types of figurative language in Pamungkas' "Flying Solo" album and to interpret its meaning. The qualitative applied was used in this research along with a descriptive analysis reaching to provide analytic descriptions of the research topics. The object of this research is the song lyrics in "Flying Solo" album by Pamungkas. There are 11 songs from the "Flying Solo" album were used as the research's objects and data sources. This research uses the theory proposed by Kennedy (1983) about types of figurative language and Leech (1981) about meanings. There are seven different types of figurative language have found: metonymy, hyperbole, paradox, personification, simile, synecdoche, and understatement. Hyperbole is the most common type of figurative language used in Pamungkas' "Flying Solo" album. This album used a lot of figurative language that describes feeling about love. The method employed in the present research is descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the utterance of the judges in Cycle 3 during direct photoshoots and comments when judging session. The utterance selected from episode 1 part 1 up to part 8. This research uses the theory of illocutionary acts proposed by Searle (1979). The results show that there are 90 data of illocutionary act types in the judges' utterances. These utterances use five types of illocutionary acts such as assertive 27 data, directive 36 data, expressive 19 data, commissive 6 data, and declarative 2 data. Based on the frequently observed utterances, there is an intended meaning to motivate each model, which becomes evident through the model’s response to the judge’s words. It is possible to conclude that the judges demonstrate various positive actions to help the models become more professional and high-quality performances. The methodology employed in the present research is qualitative, and the data validity uses triangulation. The discourse in the form of news articles analyzed in this study is three selected news about the death sentencing of Ferdy Saambo published by Tempo.co in February 2023. The news was investigated using Critical Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough and with the collaboration of Systemic Functional Grammar by Halliday. Critical Discourse by Norman Fairclough is described as having three-dimensions: micro level (description), meso level (interpretation), and macro level (explanation). At the micro level (description), the analysis focuses on textual practice to unmask the representation, relation, and identity. At the meso level (interpretation), the analysis focuses on discourse practice to unmask the text producer and the text production &amp; consumption. At the macro level (explanation), the analysis focuses on socio-cultural practice to unmask what is the ideology behind. The Systemic Functional Grammar by Halliday focuses on transitivity analysis. In this case, grammar is seen as a resource for making meaning. This research reveals that (1) Tempo.co represents the defendant or Ferdy Sambo as a negative by depicting the most used process, which is the material process. The material process shows that he is a party who has taken real action on the murder case. (2) Based on the representations and relations of the parties that realized in the news text, the news is in a position to support the government. This news is an effort to support the government to raise justice for the victim. The news also impacts the negative stigma of certain parties (to the defendants who committing the murder). Therefore, Tempo.co tends to have a political ideology, namely conservatism. Additionally, Tempo.co is a platform that provides clear, transparent, and accountable news which aligns with the journalism code and ethics.</p> Hanna Kamilah Fajri Copyright (c) 2024 Repository FIB UNSAP https://repository.unsap.ac.id/index.php/fibunsap/article/view/372 Thu, 29 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 IRONHEART'S PICK-UP LINES: A PRAGMATIC STUDY OF FLOUTING MAXIM IN THE CONTEXT OF ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS https://repository.unsap.ac.id/index.php/fibunsap/article/view/379 <p>Flouting maxims occur when someone intentionally violates one of the four cooperative maxims to create a rhetorical or humorous effect in communication. The spread of the Korean Wave into Indonesia has influenced many people's perspectives and ideologies, including the perspective of the Indonesian people through beauty images. The beauty industries exploited this phenomenon to reap more profits while at the same time spreading the ideologies and beauty image they create to the Indonesian people through the most powerful element of socialization, namely advertising. This study aims to analyze the beauty images formed by advertisers, manipulation techniques in advertisements, and the ideologie s underlying K Natural White, Citra, and Scarlett Whitening advertisement s. Fairclough's three-dimensional analysis of several beauty products video advertisements examines the characteristics of constructed beauty images, the techniques employed in beauty product advertisements to manipulate the consumers to buy the product, and the underlying ideologies in depicting these advertisements. The data for this research are verbal languages contained in the ten video advertiseme nts from these three beauty brands. This analysis also shows that the constructed beauty image that advertisers are trying to form is that beauty must be white and glowing like Korean women; women will more easily achieve their goals if they are beautiful, like the representation of Korean ideal beauty. There are many techniques to manipula te consumers to buy these products with unrealistic representations using the metaphors shown by advertisers to create an unrealistic beauty myth. Therefore, from how advertisers create beauty images and manipulate consumers to buy their products, it can be concluded that advertisers have several ideologies including Koreaness.
